Modern Woodmen of America have a speech on a certain topic every year at school for fifth grade and up. This year's topic is: My State.
When it was announced, we had three weeks to make a speech that was between 3 minutes and 5 minutes long. We start off a presentation in class, where the class chooses one winner. After that, twelve kids go to the preliminary competition, where 7 out of the 12 are chosen for the next round.
It turns out I was chosen for the class, and was also one of the top 7. After that, I had to practice for one week, at least for half of the school day, in the cafeteria, on the stage.
The finals began today. I hoped I'd draw the last number, but instead I was first. :( That sucked and made me even more nervous. Well, after all my practice for a week, I had to go immediately after the introductions. Mom told me that when she had to give a speech, she always got nervous befor the speech, but lost it and was calm during the speech, but would get nervous again after she got off. Well, the same happened to me! Like mother like son, I guess. :)
After hearing the six other contestants, which by the way were all girls (I was the only boy who made the finals), they announced the judges would go to another room to make their decision, and would take a while. Ms. Drum, Head Librarian and also of CNN (Camelot News Network, which by the way I'm also in) she found a way to entertain us while the decision was being made. She asked for a bunch of people to raise their hand, and then gave them a piece of paper with a word on it. She asked them for a one minute speech on the topic written on the paper. The overall funniest one was the topic "teacher". The kid came up and said "Ok my topic is teacher... not much to say about them. I had a teacher once in New York, it was one of those lunch lady/teacher/whatever, and whenever I would whisper in my friends ear, she would come up and say 'You think he likes you whispering in his ear?! '... and there are tons of other different teachers like math teachers, and social studies teachers... oh, and fun teachers. That's all." I think he's going to be a comedian one day.
Well, after that, the decision was made. I was hoping that I got a plaque, and they announced third place to me! Second place was Kellie Greene, and first place was Paige Lyle! Sadly, only first and second place get to move on to the next round. :( But the good thing is I won't have to compete against middle schoolers, but a sad thing too because I wanted to. So, good luck girls!
With Paige's speech, it was so good, when I looked at mom, it looked like her jaw fell through the floor, and ended up in China. She was that good.
I didn't make it as far as I hoped, but I am surprised that I made it this far, and I'm happy.
